Found another wine to add to our list:

The Campo Viejo Reserva Tempranillo 2001 and 2003

2001 is 13% alcohol
2003 is 13.5% alcohol

Each is $15.00/bottle.

Look forward to Saturday!

That would actually be quite fun. A decade of difference. Although, lets not open the 03 until after we ensure that the '93 isn't flawed. I will have the hudson as a backup anyway. The last bottle of the Hudson that I opened was with Aunt M and Crafty and it was oxidized. I'm 0 for 2 with 1999 Kistlers but doing great with the 1993s!

Good evening, all. Really looking forward to this, so let's get started...

Tonight, hubby and I are tasting and comparing...

This evening, I'm using a Schott Zwiesel Diva Cab/Bordeaux stem and hubby is using a Schott Zwiesel Diva Burgundy stem.

We're starting with the Francis Ford Coppola Rosso. Slight change in our agenda. Instead of comparing 2005 to 2006, we're comparing 2004 to 2006.

Both vintages approximately $10.00/bottle.

The 2004 alcohol - 13.5%
The 2006 alcohol - 13.5%

APPEARANCE: The 2004.
Darlene - Ruby-brick red to purple, numerous legs on glass but slow in forming.
Hubby - Ruby-brick red, numberous legs, but again, slow in forming.

APPEARANCE: The 2006.
Darlene - Dark red to purple in color, numberous legs, but quick to form.
Hubby - Clear ruby, numerous legs, slow to form.

NOSE: The 2004.
Darlene - Oh wow...chocolate berry from the get-go. Delicious immediately! And the berry is dark berry, and the chocolate goes on for days!!
Hubby - Dark chocolate, dark berry, slight camp-fire smoke. A fun nose!

NOSE: The 2006.
Darlene - Much lighter berry, some red cherries and strawberries, still the chocolate but more light-berry in evidence.
Hubby - Fruit-forward, lots of cherry, with hints of chocolate.

LET's GIVE IT A WHIRL: The 2004.
Darlene - Immediate chocolate on the fore-palate, quickly accompanied by currant and cassis, a slight hint of white pepper. Some heat on the mid-palate.
Hubby - Immediate chocolate, pleasant forward to mid-palate tannins, light sour cherry and pleasant mid-palate heat.

LET's GIVE IT A WHIRL: The 2006.
Darlene - Light berry on the forward palate, lighter on the chocolate note, mid-palate heat.
Hubby - Light berry with moderate tannins both forward and mid.

FINISH: The 2004.
Darlene - Long richness. Again, hints of chocolate, currant, and cassis. Wow...
Hubby - Smokey chocolate, light berry, mild tannins...Where's my steak....?

FINISH: The 2006.
Darlene - Again, nice long finish, a little more heat on this one, and again, lighter berries with hints of chocolate.
Hubby - Fruity finish, mild tannins...where's my cheese...?

SCORE: The 2004.
Darlene - 90
Hubby - 89

SCORE: The 2006.
Darlene - 88
Hubby - 88

Will be back shortly with our tempranillo tastings...

We're back. Now comparing the Campo Viejo Reserva Tempranillo 2001 and 2003.

I'm again using the Schott Zwiesel Diva Cab/Bordeaux stem and Hubby is using the Schott Zwiesel Diva Burgundy stem.

2001 alcohol content is 13%.
2003 alcohol content is 13.5%

Each approximately $15.00/bottle.

APPEARANCE: The 2001.
Darlene - Ruby-brick, with colorless legs on the bowl.
Hubby - Brick-ruby, multiple legs, no color.

APPEARANCE: The 2003.
Darlene - More ruby in color, however, still hues of brick in the swirl.
Hubby - Ruby with hint of brick.

NOSE: The 2001.
Darlene - Oh wow...how do I say this. OK...refreshing vegetal, with old-world terroir, meaning, some fresh soil, with boysenberry and celery...lovely, lovely.
Hubby - Tack room in a misty apple orchard.

NOSE: The 2003.
Darlene - Again, refreshing vegetal, however not as open as the '01. Yet, again, the more I swirl, the more aromatic the wine becomes. Get hints of dry hay, celery, and very ripe strawberry.
Hubby - Wooden porch next to a hay field ready for harvest.
Warm, mid-afternoon aroma, slight popcorn smells, light berry.

LET's GIVE IT A WHIRL: The 2001.
Darlene - Burnt tire meets blackberries. Petrol, as well. It's as if I screeched to a halt on the road and ran into a bed of blackberries. Yet petrol on the palate, but not unattractive. Full-bodied and bold yet not overpowering.
Hubby - Petrol, dry hay, vegetal, apple skin, moderate tannins. This taste reminds me of stacking bayles of hay on a trailor being pulled by a tractor, next to an apple orchard. Meaning, dry hay, petrol, dust, apples...

LET's GIVE IT A WHIRL: The 2003.
Darlene - Much fruitier, light berries, still some burnt tire but much more berry component. Again, the petrol...
Hubby - Sour cherry and dusty tack room with heat on the forward- and mid-palate.

FINISH: The 2001.
Darlene Lovely, long finish, some petrol, heat, and dark berry.
Hubby - Heat, mild tannins, chalkiness, lingering dark berry.

FINISH: The 2003.
Darlene - Nice, very long. Much more acidic, sour cherry, again petrol.
Hubby - Sour cherry, good tannins, nice heat.

SCORE: The 2001
Darlene 89 Bolder, more complex
Hubby 90 A fun wine, woul pair with a great steak and potatoes

SCORE: The 2003
Darlene 87 Needs to cellar.
Hubby 87

Not as formal notes here.

The 1993 Kistler Dutton Ranch was even more alive than the bottle that I had a few months ago. Wow. Without having seen the wine come from the bottle, there is no way that I would have believed it!

What surprised me was that the flavor profile was so similar. The 1993 was much more integrated with more cotton candy and less oily butter. Still, a fun experience that both Budman and I would be lucky to repeat on many occasions!

These are the two wines I picked to taste for this month’s tasting. I picked them up at Total Wines in Cherry Hill, NJ. Both are Temprenillo grapes.

2005 Montebuena Rioja, 13.5% alc $10.99
2004 Montebuena Rioja, 13.5% alc $12.99

I planned to have a few friends over for the tasting but that didn’t happen, their loss. I didn’t pair these with food on the first night although I did try some goat cheese (humbolt fog and le chevrot) after I tasted both wines and that was definitely not a match. It made the cheese taste like ammonia and the wine tasted horrible. Maybe a sharp cheese and some beef salami would have been better. Here are my notes before the cheese.

I started with the 2004,
Dark purple, the nose was a bit earthy with some cocoa and cherry. Medium bodied with hints of strawberry and cherry and some spice. Not a heavy wine. Medium finish about 20 seconds.

2005
This was a little darker than the 2004. More fruit on the nose, cherry and blueberry. The taste was fruiter than the 2004 with tart cherries and blackberries.

On night two I had both wines with roasted turkey and stuffing which was a nice match especially with the 2004. I think they are both ready for drinking now but another year or two wouldn’t hurt these wines.

2004 3 ½* out of 5
2005 3 ½ - 4* out of 5

Both were decent wines especially for the price that I will be drinking them again.

Darlene, I like your style of notes!

I have had the Campo Viejo Reserva Tempranillo 2003 and enjoyed it, it is one of my go to wines when I am at the PA Sate Store., around $13-14.

The 03 Kistler Dutton was as enjoyable as the 93. I think we were all so shocked at how good the 93 was that we overlooked the 03 a bit. It had the typical Kistler oily mouthfeel, was not overoaked, and had ample citrus flavors, and an endless finish.
